Minimalism? or Maximalism?

This isn’t a post to decide which is better. It’s like asking someone who likes tea or coffee. It depends on the individual’s perception of skills and beauty. This is just an “awe” post. What is minimalism? It’s sorta like keeping it simple, just enough to tell you what it is about. And Maximalism is the exact opposite. Details and details. I have limited resources at the moment, but here’s an example of both minimalism and maximalism i got from a few of my graphic novels.

Minimalism

Takehiko Inoue’s Vagabond, Vizbig edition vol.4

They’re both beautiful in their own way, but i am deeply impressed and inspired by Mignola’s style of drawing. He draws in a “negative” way, as in drawing the shadows to reveal the object of focus. Both of these artists are masters of story-telling, as the comics leads you perfectly from page to page; whilst conveying emotions through these pictures.

There is a time when i keep thinking, what is my style of art? Takehiko Inoue’s detailed sketches are so incredible, but Mignola’s simple, dark inkings are so damn cool. Then it strikes me one day when i was trying to draw a piece for a competition. What am i trying to say through this? I tried copying various artists, but it’s not just skills. I needed more than that. Artists are somewhat storytellers too. To successfully convey the ideas in your mind is not an easy feat. For all the time i’ve spent polishing my skills with a pen, this is a good lesson to be learned. Draw what you see in your mind…..and don’t be a photocopy machine.
